Sea ice near Mc-Murdo with Icebreaker "Polestar" in the background (-77.6'' lat, 166'' long)

The Earth's South-Pole is situated on top of a huge glacier at a physical height of nearly 3000 meters. Since this monster glacier covers the Earth South-Pole, there is not much of what one may describe as scenery. On the other hand, Mc-Murdo is located at the edge of the continent at the huge Ross ice shelf. The town is not very picturesque, but the surroundings are astonashing. It is in close proximity to open-water (summer) and marine life. 3000 meter high mountains are toward the south-west and there is even a 4000 meter high active vulcano, Mt Erebus. My exposure to Antarctica (the size of the continental united states) is of course quite limited, yet the pictures below are quite representative of the beauty of the continent.
