At the Southpole in Near-IR

The South Pole, (-45C, elevation ~3000 meters)

For the last several years I have had the opportunity to visit the South Pole for work on AST/RO, The Antarctic Submillimeter Telescope and Remote Observatory. AST/RO is located at the Earth's geographic South-Pole Station, Antarctica. Duties include technical analyses and advice on optical systems and submillimeter wave instrumentation (200-1500 GHz).. Physical presence is required for several weeks during he Austral summer, and the work includes characterization of receiver and telescope optics, IF amplifier and Phase Lock Loop (PLL) behavior and repair/calibration of back-end electronics that runs the observatory.
The pictures are divided under the four subject headings:

Mc Murdo, Antarctica
Mc Mcurdo is located at the edge of the Ross ice-shelf. (-77.8" latitude, 166" longitude)

Geographical South-pole
The geographical south-pole is situated on top a huge glacier at an physiological altitude of 3000 meters (10,000 ft).

"MAPO", dark Sector
Variety of the physical sciences are represented at the pole as in the dark-sector shown here

Scenery in Antarctica
The scenery in antarctica is truly spectacular, especially the trans antarctic moutains and the edge of the continent.
