In this talk, I will discuss what we can learn from simulations of
molecular cloud formation and evolution that trace the thermal and
chemical history of the gas in addition to its dynamical evolution. In
particular, I will focus on the transition within clouds from ionized
carbon to neutral carbon and thence to CO, and the role that these
coolants play in governing the star formation rate.
